Known for using images and materials culled from her immediate environment, Carol Hepper often creates work that references the context of her surroundings. During her residency at the Armory, and in response to the building’s varied states of renewal and restoration, Hepper has created a new body of work that relates to the way we renovate and rethink our cities, buildings and bodies.
As Hepper reflects, “I have had an amazing opportunity not only having a studio in this historic building for a year, but also to be here during the restoration process. I am struck every day by the contrast of the bustle and buzz on the street and walking into the quiet interior of this immense, historic building where a methodical, architectural dig is underway. Layers upon layers of history are being carefully peeled back by the restoration crew. I’m interested in how—as a pattern in society—we rethink, redecorate and replace. Here at the Armory, surfaces are being revealed through excavation; history is being uncovered; what’s going on is beyond a cosmetic facelift. I view it as the Armory’s Orlando moment— bringing it into the 21st century with maybe even a little Virginia Woolf re-gendering.”
Celebrate with Carol Hepper as she concludes her year as an Armory Artist-in-Residence with an installation of new sculptural work in the Field & Staff Room.
