From early in his career, Philippe Parreno has been a firm believer in the power of collaboration. He is known for his collaboration with other artists, musicians, curators, filmmakers, and producers in the creation of exhibitions and artworks. There are several types of collaborators involved in the creation of H {N)Y P N(Y} OSIS: from artists like Pierre Huyghe and Tino Sehgal, to concert pianist Mikhaïl Rudy, to DJ Agoria, and sound designer Nicolas Becker, amongst many others. Their creative energies coalesce in this unique experience.
For this exhibition, Parreno also introduces to his practice another type of collaborator: the City of New York. The happenstance sounds recorded by microphones placed in the streets outside the Park Avenue Armory become part of the exhibition by triggering sequences of events within it, and at times, also become part of the multifaceted soundscape that fills the Drill Hall.
All of this is possible through a complex automation system that enables the artist to coordinate the events that are influenced by the outside. Parreno’s relationship with automation and technologies allows environmental collaborations, as evidenced by the city’s role in the activation of the exhibition. Through different types of collaborative practices Parreno questions traditional definitions of authorship and mastery as his control over the exhibition is shared with other human and environmental actors.
